Im not a complete gear head but some things are just essential. When it comes to training gear I am a little particular with some things that I have to have for my workouts. Although, I do secretly admire people who can just throw anything on and head out the door. A good buddy and my riding and running partner in Vail, Co was that person. We would go out for a ride, run or hike and he would just turn up and go. He would still kick my but. He would only have 1 glove on a cold day and couldn’t be arsed going back to find the other one.
And one of the best athletes I know who also lived in Vail, Co could beat anyone with any equipment. We were heading out to ski one day on a cold day and he forgot his ski pants and left his boots in the car overnight. If you’ve ever skied you know frozen boots are the worst. No big deal for this guy. He walked through the village in his jeans, now his ski pants, stopped in a cafe to grab a coffee and tried and heat his boots, and off he went. Without a care in the world. Can you imagine a cyclist doing this? 🚴♀️ 🤣🤣 . NO WAY. They have to have matching outfits, sunglasses, and shoes and even the bike often has a matching paint job.
The only thing I need to work out is my black socks. These are a must.
I remember the days when I would just go for a run. No music, no watch, no phone. Just you and the elements. Showing my age now. But before I could drive I would ask my parents to drive me around my running route so I knew to check the distance. I would have them reset the trip meter and do a lap around the block. Then before I would take off for my run, I would look at the clock before I left the house and check the time when I got back. LOL. Now we have music in our ears, a GPS on our wrists, and a heart rate monitor strapped to our chest.
